چکیده

This study examines the effects of different kinds of focus and of focus constituent size on the phonetic realization of accent peaks in declarative sentences in varieties of continental West Germanic. Speakers were drawn from six populations along the coastal line of the Netherlands, covering Zeelandic Dutch, Hollandic Dutch, West Frisian, Dutch Low Saxon, German Low Saxon, and Northern High German. Our findings suggest that focus structure has systematic effects on segmental durations, the scaling and timing of the accentual f0 gesture, and on the alignment of f0 targets relative to the beginning of the accented syllable. However, the difference between neutral focus and corrective focus has more systematic effects than variation of the size of the focused constituents in corrective focus. In addition, speakers from different places were found to adopt different strategies in signalling these focus structures. Speakers of Hollandic Dutch and West Frisian expanded the pitch span on the accented word, whereas speakers of Low and High German rescaled single targets of the accentual f0 gesture, and speakers of Zeelandic Dutch mixed both strategies.

Verb Clusters in Continental West Germanic Dialects

The Continental West Germanic Languages include the standard varieties of Dutch, Frisian, and High German, as well as a large number of non-standard varieties, the more familiar of which are the dialects spoken in Belgium and the South of the Netherlands (Flemish, Brabantish, Limburgian), Northern Germany (Low German), the Rhine Valley (Luxemburgish), South-Eastern Germany and Austria (e.g. Bav...

Word and phrasal stress disentangled: Pitch peak alignment in Frisian and Dutch declarative structures

This paper investigates intonational pitch variations and pitch peak alignment in declarative sentences and is part of a larger study of declarative, interrogative and imperative grammatical constructions in the Frisian-Dutch contact situation. Frisian is a minority language spoken in the province of Fryslân in the Netherlands. Following Jun [19], we devised a reading task in which phrasal into...

Linguistic distance as a determinant of the mutual intelligibility between Netherlandic and Belgian Dutch language varieties

Research on the mutual intelligibility of closely related Germanic languages has shown that several linguistic and extra-linguistic factors determine intelligibility scores to a high degree. In this paper, we aim to pinpoint the precise role of the determinant phonetic distance. As for example Gooskens (2007) shows, aggregate Levenshtein distances turn out to be good predictors of the intelligi...

The origin of Afrikaans pronunciation: a comparison to west Germanic languages and Dutch dialects

This paper aims to find the origin of the Afrikaans pronunciation with the use of dialectometry. First, Afrikaans was compared to Standard Dutch, Standard Frisian and Standard German. Pronunciation distances were measured by means of Levenshtein distances. Afrikaans was found to be closest to Standard Dutch. Second, the Afrikaans pronunciation was compared to 361 Dutch dialect varieties in the ...

The Contribution of Linguistic Factors to the Intelligibility of Closely Related Languages

The three mainland Scandinavian languages (Danish, Swedish and Norwegian) are so closely related that the speakers mostly communicate in their own languages (semicommunication). Even though the three West Germanic languages Dutch, Frisian and Afrikaans are also closely related, semicommunication is not usual between these languages. In the present investigation, results from intelligibility tes...
